The Jackson School of International Studies (JSIS) is a leader in advancing the understanding of and engagement in world issues. As a unit within the Social Sciences Division of the UW College of Arts and Sciences, JSIS combines social sciences, humanities, and professional fields in innovative teaching, cutting-edge research, and powerful community outreach. The Jackson School of International Studies has an outstanding opportunity for an Academic Counselor to join their team.POSITION PURPOSEThe Senior Academic Counselor will provide long-range academic counseling for all Jackson School undergraduate majors and minors; advising students in the areas of academic planning, interpretation of department, college and university requirements, degree requirements, career exploration, and other related matters; act as a liaison to central university counseling services (e.g., centers for career services, minority affairs, international student services) for student referrals, student records, etc.; counsel non-students about possible admission to JSIS programs and provide academic planning advice before transferring to the university; and work with other counselors in the development of advising materials and resources for students. The Academic Counselor reports to the Director of Academic Services.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIESAdvising 75%
- Provide individualized, holistic support for undergraduate students about all curricular requirements with JSIS majors and minors, prospective majors and minors, prospective UW students, and members of the public.
- Assist students in navigating the process associated with their academic records, degree audits, and registration, guiding them to progress toward their degree.
- Provide counseling toward experiential learning opportunities and help students prepare for post-graduation by linking them to appropriate coursework for their major and or minor and the Assistant Director of Student Services to help provide them with resources for career and job search planning or the graduate school application process.
- Collaborate with the advising team, faculty, and other campus offices to provide outstanding service to our students, supporting their academic and professional goals and timely completion of their degrees.
- Create a sense of community, with detailed attention to building and promoting a sense of belonging and inclusivity and creating a welcoming learning environment for all students. This includes being adept at facilitating difficult conversations when required as part of community-building and creating an inclusive environment.
- Engage student participation in planning and implementing community-building events.
- Evaluate individual student progress continuously and regularly adjust the strategies and offerings accordingly.
- Stay current on best practices and innovative approaches for student advising and retention.
Administrative 15%
- Maintain records of students’ progress in degree programs through the maintenance of hard-copy advising files, the UW Degree Audit System, and the Electronic Academic Records System.
- Communicate appropriately and as needed with students, colleagues, the OAS Director, and CAS administration to complete any necessary tasks to stay on track for degree requirements.
- Prepare graduation applications and keep students apprised of progress in the major and general education requirements.
- Interpret and carry out JSIS program policies and procedures related to academic programs.
- Works collaboratively with and serves as a liaison between outreach, retention, and other direct student support services on campus; maintains positive internal and external relationships
Outreach and Events 10%
- Lead the admission, transfer, and orientation student process
- Represent the Jackson School at on-campus, off-campus (ie. community college), and recruitment fairs
- Oversee the organization and execution of the annual convocation graduation ceremony.
- Design and present a variety of workshops for undergraduate students on topics such as info sessions for majors/minors, events like Dawg Daze, JSIS Movie nights, JSIS Open houses, and Alum or career-related workshops, job search strategy workshops, or graduate school sessions.
- Collaborate with the Academic Services Director, Assistant Director of Student Services, and other members of the OAS team to develop workshops as needed.
- Other duties as assigned.
Minimum Requirements
- Bachelor’s Degree in Education, Counseling, International Studies, or related field and two to three years of experience in student services, student advising, student activities & engagement, customer service experience, relationship management, or other mentoring.
Equivalent education/experience will substitute for all minimum qualifications except when there are legal requirements for a Bachelor's, such as a license/certification/registration.ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS
- Demonstrated ability to be self-motivated and work independently, effectively, and efficiently in a collaborative and fast-paced work environment.
- Demonstrated interpersonal skills and ability to communicate effectively and efficiently both orally and in writing.
- Strong ability to multitask and manage time.
- Excellent public speaking and presentation skills.
- Competence with MS Office software.
- Basic program tracking and assessment skills. Strong attention to detail and organizational skills.
Desired Qualifications
- Demonstrated facilitator skills; able to manage diverse faculty, staff, and students.
- Knowledge of UW student administrative systems (SDB, DARS, EARS) and UW policies and procedures relating to academics and curriculum.
